Boy, 12, tried to shoot teacher with .22-caliber handgun

A 12-year-old boy in Eldridge, Iowa, has been charged with attempted murder and carrying weapons on school grounds after he brought a loaded .22-caliber handgun to a junior high school on Friday.

Court documents say the 12-year-old entered a North Scott Junior High classroom with the handgun and ordered everyone to the floor, before pointing the gun at his teacher's head and pulling the trigger. However, the gun didn't fire because the safety was still in place. A female teacher was able to take the weapon from the boy before police arrived.

Superintendent Joe Stutting said the North Scott Junior High school was placed on lockdown. He added that no one was injured in the incident.

The name of the boy is not being released because he is a minor. He remains in the Scott County Juvenile Detention Center.
